Once the process workflow of heap leaching has been characterized, it is possible to model the heap leach stage sequentially with the Arena simulation software. The update of copper recovery over time is simulated by parametrizing the analytical models retrieved from the literature, and incorporating them into the Arena simulation [ 23 ].

However, in order to mimic this approach for a laboratory study, the heap configuration was simulated in a heap set up (not shown here) to achieve a dynamic leaching process. The set-up involved, a perforated Buchner funnel (70 mm) with a filter paper (0.45 um) was used to basically contain the heap and facilitate collection of the leachate over time for metal analysis.
